Edward Thomas, born in 1878, analyse in Oxford and was a well known for his literary criticism. He was also an excellent essayist and biographer. He was persuaded into writing poesy by his close friend Robert Frost, dying shortly later on in World War one. His posthumous influence has been respectable since and his work is now highly thought of.
His poem Words has a blissful tone to it, with much positivity throughout. He describes quarrel as though they have life themselves, and that they ingest the poet to wrote a poem, not the other way round: appear of us all/That make rhymes,/Will you choose. He expresses his applaud for the diversity of words, how they can describe anything and create something b be-ass up to now though words are hoaryer farther/Than erstwhile(a)est yew. Thomas seems to try to push the boundaries, to show how any legions of words can be used with such bod - representing the freedom of words. This is portrayed in his unequal stanzas (each one contains a different number of lines), his irregular use of rhyme and seemingly exaggerated use of punctuation.
Thomas uses both negative and unconditional words throughout the poem to create contrast and introduction diversity. Words such as pain, dead and old differ from others like content, sweetness and ecstasy.
My darling line is an oxymoron, combining opposites: Worn new. When first see this seems to make little sense as once something has been wear it cannot possibly be new, but when studied it is realized that the noun are words in general. Thomas is trying to suggest that even though the words themselves have been around for generations as our hills are, old they can create something beautiful and different every time.
many comparisons are used in the first stanza, to show how words choose the writers, as the winds use a crack in the wall.
