On the morn of June 16th 1976 thousands of young students marched through the streets of Soweto to protest the Afrikaans long suit Decree of 1974 which forced all schools to use Afrikaans as a language of instruction. This intended peaceful protest escalated into a violent confrontation amid the youths and the police which lead the to tragic loss of hundreds of lives. June 16th will forever be remembered as a day of great tragedy and is today commemorated with juvenility Day. This June 16th sets the main theme for this poem. In the poem we marry the thought process of a young man who is preparing himself to participate in the protests the following day. He is reminiscing on what he treasures in life while dealing with feelings of fear of what might happen. The poet has pick out the use a first-person speaker, who expresses thought and emotion. He puts himself in the tog of the young man.
By doing this, the poet creates a personal relationship between the reader and the youth which adds further to the sense of sadness machine-accessible with his destiny as well as emphasizing what a massive national tragedy the Soweto uprising was and how every concerned citizen was affected.
