John Updikes A&P is the story of a cashier at a grocery store and how he matures. One of the ways Updike expresses this is through the main characters views and definition of the opposition sex. Sammys changing attitude towards women displays how he grows and matures throughout the story. His harsh criticism of the way women think and demeanor is displayed right from the beginning of the story but is later shown to be a bit softened. The reader sees this through his negative description of the regular shoppers and of the woman he checks out in the beginning, his confused feelings about the trio girls, and through his effort to defend the three girls in the end of the story.
Sammys objectification and negative attitude towards the opposite sex is clearly displayed in the beginning of the story as he describes the woman going through his register. He describes her as a witch about fifty with rouge on her cheekb peerlesss and no eyebrows (15) and thinks to himself that if shed been born at the right time, they would acquit burned her over in Salem. (15) Sammy does not even neck that it was his fault that he double rang the item because he was stark(a) at one of the girls rear. He fixes his mistake but continues to negatively and ignorantly judge the older woman as he bags her items.



Another instance where Updike shows Sammys ignorance towards women is when he describes the setting and spatial relation of the A&P. The description of the local women as having six children and unhealthy veins mapping their legs (17) says nothing about the actual location of the A&P but does show how Sammy ignorantly objectifies the opposite sex.
The miscellaneous feelings Sammy shows in his opinion of the three girls display a change intensity in his attitude towards women.
