A Sense of Uncertainty in A flush for Emily
In William Faulkners A Rose for Emily, we read with Emily from the beginning of the written report. As the story goes on, Faulkner starts adding clues as to where the story might go. By the end of the story, we no longer sympathize with Emily beca hold we know she was a killer. William Faulkner provides a star of uncertainty to the highest degree who Emily actually is until the end of the story in order to catch the proofreader by surprise.
The story starts out by lecture about vault Emily Griersons funeral. Readers will most often sympathize with a character if the author provides a sense of vulnerability, such as death. Further on in the story, we scratch out Emilys father had passed away and her sweetheart had left over(p) her. Further much, the townspeople are always complaining about the step of Miss Emilys house. Judge Stevens says to one of the townspeople, will you consign a lady to her face of smelling bad? (545), which provides the reader with even more sympathy than before. At this point in the story, Miss Emily just seems like a poor ancient woman with nobody left to love.
As we read on, Faulkner provides more details about Miss Emily, which might suggest her flimsy insanity.



For the first three days after her fathers death, Miss Emily acted as if her father was still alive, keeping the stillborn body with her until the townspeople threatened to resort to law and advertise to bury the body. At one point, Miss Emily goes to the pharmacist to taint arsenic. The druggist tells her, … the law requires you to tell what you are going to use it for (547). Miss Emily says not a single word, as she scarce stands tall and looks straight up at the druggist until the druggist looks away to go get the arsenic. Faulkner makes the reader think Miss Emily is going to kill herself, to throw the reader off from what Emily is in truth going to use the arsenic for.
