As mentioned in the text, stereotypes are so universal and a great deal experienced that they take care to be essential to the human measure up. Stereotypes are formed from past events and it has been said they go as far back as slavery. They survive because they provide us with brief explanations of various social groups. And lastly, they appear to be fatal because they are formed almost entirely at an unconscious mind level. There have been many explanations about the history of stereotypes, where they were formed. such as slavery in America, the attack on driblet Harbor that began WWII, or politics; there is no expressed answer. What is known is that there are two processes that are manifold when forming a stereotype. Categorization, sorting spate into groups, and distinguishing which groups we belong to (in-groups) versus which ones we dont (out groups). Upon meeting people we very quickly group them found on our past experiences and first impression of them. This may seem convenient at first but there is a lot of path for error because there is no room for exceptions or diversity. once this process is do we then take root whether or non we can identify with them, if we have things in common with them.

If the answer is yes they become part of our in-group, everyone else is part of your out-group. Once the stereotype is formed we must continue to feed it. This is done through a process called illusory correlation, which is the tendency for people to overestimate variables that are only slightly or not at all correlated. People will overestimate the connector between variables that are distinctive as well as the association between variables that they assume or expect go together. In the book an example is given about a study done observing the behavior of people in group X, which contains 100 people, and group Y, which contains 20 people.
