Sean Brawley & Ray Ring April 3, 2011 Paul Petzoldt Profile Paul Petzoldt Paul Petzoldt was natural on January 16, 1908. He was born in Creston, Iowa but was increase in southerly Idaho. Growing up in southern Idaho Petzoldt had a love for the outdoors and was particularly fond of the Tetons, a nearby mountain range. When Petzoldt was sixteen he made his initial ascent of Wyomings Grand Teton, season wearing cowman boots. Needless to say it was not a successful pilgrimage and this is when Petzoldt realized that the need to have better training and preparation. He became a pioneer in a number of mountaineer techniques. Petzoldt was the first to use a voice signal corpse for climbers and developed the sliding middle-man technique for snow climbing and travel. In 1938, Petzolt was on the first American expedition to K2 in the Himalayas and while on this climb. During World War II Petzoldt trained ski troops safety and preparation techniques. He also worked with the segment of Agriculture and was responsible for the buying and shipment of food to Russia with the give Lease Program. In 1963, Petzoldt testified in front of Congress in favor of the Wilderness Act. In 1963 he also helped to build the first American Outward Bound program in Colorado.

Through his experience with Outward Bound Petzoldt wanted to be able to train leader to conduct wilderness programs. This resourcefulness resulted in the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). NOLS was founded by Petzoldt in 1965 in Lander, Wyoming. Today it is the leading non-profit outdoor training school. Petzoldt later founded the Wilderness Education Association (WEA) in 1977. It is verbalize that Petzoldt considers NOLS and WEA to be his two most important contributions to society. NOLS has 14 locations round the world and educates more than 3,000 students annually.
